Middle aged men chilling in the underground parking lot?

Postby Jaboney » Sat Feb 24, 2018 11:01

Discovered something new (to me) this morning.

Had to go to work for a school open house/ parent-teacher meetings. Parked, for the first time on a Saturday morning, in the lot beneath a nearby city park. Was surprised to see a dozen or more middle aged men sitting here and there, behind or beside their vehicles, on lawn chairs. Reading the paper, having tea, writing in notebooks.

Why?? It's not raining. Not too cool. The park's far from full.
Thought maybe they were all hiding from the missus. But why in a grey car park? Felt like a convention of low-level extras/ henchmen from The Sopranos.

Just when I thought I had grown inured to the local cultural oddities.

You rich big city folk with your cars and underground parking lots.

Presumably it's a meeting point for some activity. Having said that, I park a lot in various lots in Taipei on account of one of my jobs and come to think of it there's often a few blokes loitering. I've never thought about it before. Perhaps, as you say, it's their equivalent of the garden shed where they escape for some peace and quiet. At the risk of an enormous stereotype, a lot of marriages here do seem to involve each party avoiding the other as much as possible.

Perhaps they're allowed to smoke there and not in the park?

No smoking in underground car parks. I got pulled up when I tried to have a barbecue. Political correctness gone mad.

No one was smoking.
A couple guys had cots!
There was even a tent.
Almost looked like a homeless encampment but most had tablets or phones.

It's the big-city version of a dank, spidery garden shed, the traditional refuge-from-the-missus of middle-aged men in temperate climates. Did they have bubbling pots of homebrew?

No, not that I saw. Wouldn't be surprised though.

I don't get it. What's wrong with Hampstead Heath?

Not that there is anything wrong with it, but don`t a lot of people from every persuasion (gay, straight, every shade in between etc.) use it as kind of like a free love motel in the bushes or loo during the warmer months?
